Chiropractors are experts in biomechanics and neurology. They understand how problems like pain, restricted movement, pins and needles and numbness can be caused and successfully treated.
Dr. Stefaan Vossen (DC) our Clinical Director and Dr. Marie Vossen (DC) come from one of the largest and most successful chiropractic (and clinical) families in the world – the Meersemanns / Vossens.
Working in collaboration with our podiatrists, physical therapists, and others in our team, our chiropractors have an exceptional record in the treatment of even the most complex and chronic back pain and musculoskeletal conditions.
What is a Chiropractor?
Chiropractic is a regulated health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. Chiropractors are highly-trained regulated healthcare professionals who typically study for 5 years (post-graduate level) and have particular expertise in the treatment of conditions including back pain, knee pain, hip pain, joint pain and headaches of muscular origin.
At Core Clinics our chiropractors specialise in the treatment of chronic (long term or recurring) conditions including lower back pain (including patients with disc hernias / disc degeneration), chronic headaches and migraines. We also specialise in supporting sportspeople in recovering from injury, reducing the risk of injury, and optimising their sporting performance.
What Does a Chiropractor Do?
Prior to recommending any treatment programme your chiropractor will always complete a comprehensive consultation and assessment covering your health status and history, current and past symptoms and issues, your health concerns and priorities, and thorough physical, functional and neurological tests. Our chiropractors take a holistic whole body / whole person approach, taking into account the overall function of your neuromusculoskeletal system as well as your nutrition, mental health and wellbeing, any underlying medical conditions, and your lifestyle.
Based on the results of your consultation and assessment your chiropractor will give you a detailed account of their findings, and diagnostic information that explains not only what your condition or issues are but also why you are experiencing these problems. They will then go on to explain what your treatment options are and the likely outcomes, benefits, and any potential risks or side-effects that might be associated with your different treatment options. Our chiropractors also advise their patients on self-care options including exercise, and recommend care bespoke packages tailored to each patients’ individual needs involving practitioners within Core Clinics or externally where appropriate.
If following your initial assessment your chiropractor advises that chiropractic treatment is suitable for you and you wish to process with a treatment plan, what can you expect?
Treatment visits typically involve your chiropractor using a variety of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including manual manipulation or ‘adjustments’ of the spine and other joints in the body, hand-held tools (activators, massagers etc.), acupuncture and soft tissue treatment.
After your initial consultation, treatment (which will usually start on your second visit) can generally be given while you are fully clothed.
Research evidence shows that chiropractic is a very safe, low-risk form of treatment. Side-effects – such as muscular aches – are generally mild and short-lived and far from being a cause for concern they are actually a sign that the body is responding well to treatment. Your chiropractor will explain to you in detail any potential risks or likely side-effects that you may experience to ensure that you are fully informed. There is an increasingly strong evidence base for the use of chiropractic in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions including back pain, and it is specifically recommended by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for the treatment of lower back pain. The evidence is particularly compelling for the use of chiropractic in combination with other therapies (including talking therapies and exercise) and self care (which your chiropractor will advise you about).
