Proven approach to the elbow and wrist pain

Acute (short term) elbow and wrist pain and other symptoms usually result from an injury like a sprain or strain. Sometimes you might be aware of the injury happening – such as when you fall and land on your arm or hand – but sometimes it might take a day or two before pain starts to show itself. Longer-term pain may indicate illness or other underlying fac-tors; the elbow and wrist are particularly prone to repetitive usage conditions.

Elbow, wrist and hand pain are often caused by overuse or repetitive strain.

Even people who have a sedentary job or carry out typical day to day activities tend to make repetitive arm, wrist and hand movements. Many sports and hobbies involve similar repetitive usage or the lower arm – two of the most common elbow conditions are commonly referred to as ‘golfer’s elbow’ and ‘tennis elbow’. Elbow pain can occasionally be due to arthritis, but the elbow joint is generally less affected by wear-and-tear damage than are many other joints.

Sub-conditions and symptoms we can help with

Symptoms we can help with include pain, aches, pins and needles, numbness, restricted movement, weakness, or referred pain. Your symptoms may be confined to one area of your arm or felt in different parts. It’s common for conditions affecting the elbow to refer or radiate towards the wrist and hand.

Conditions we commonly treat include:

Treatment options

We have a variety of treatment approaches both to reduce pain and symptoms in your elbow or lower arm, and to rehabilitate the injury and avoid recurrence.

Because the underlying mechanisms in the body that cause elbow and wrist symptoms are many and varied, it’s important to get a clear diagnosis before undergoing treatment or a self-care regime. After your diagnosis we’ll recommend the best treatment approach. This could include acupuncture, shockwave therapy, hands on treatments and exercises for you to continue at home.

Common elbow, wrist and hand conditions

Your symptoms may be confined to one area of your arm or a combination

Because the underlying mechanisms in the body that cause el-bow and wrist symptoms are many and varied, it’s important to get a clear diagnosis before undergoing treatment or a self-care regime.

Tennis elbow is not necessarily a tennis-related condition. It’s a condition where the outer part of the elbow becomes painful and tender. Gripping and movements of the wrist may be painful,  especially when the wrist is bent backwards or when lifting objects – like filling a kettle or picking up a pan. The condition can also cause morning stiffness in the elbow and pins and needles or pain in the hand.

As with tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow isn’t limited to golfers. The pain of golfer’s elbow is felt on the inside of your elbow, specifically where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow. The pain might spread into your forearm and wrist.

RSI symptoms are commonly experienced in the hand and wrist by people who use their hands a lot for their work – for example hairdressing, typing or manual work. Symptoms can include localised pain, swelling, altered sensation, pins and needles, weakness and stiffness.

Carpal tunnel is commonly experienced by people who use their hands and wrists a lot for their jobs. The carpal tunnel is a structure in your arm that protects the median nerve on the inside of your wrist, and the tendons you use to bend the fingers. This tunnel can become constricted, and when it does, nerve compression can result. Nerve compression can lead to a variety of slightly disconcerting and sometimes painful symptoms, such as numbness and tingling to the thumb, 1st, and 2nd fingers.

In addition, pain to the wrist and hand can be experienced and swelling can sometimes occur.

Cubital tunnel syndrome is a common form of nerve compression damage that can lead to elbow, wrist, and hand pain. This condition is different from carpal tunnel syndrome, and occurs when pressure is put on the cubital tunnel and surrounding nerves.

It is caused by repetitive pressure on the ulnar nerve, which is located inside of the elbow and is sometimes known as your “funny bone.”  This condition can cause pain, numbness, and tingling, especially to the ring and pinky fingers.

Inflammation present in the tendons and connective tissue at the elbow. When the inflammation involves the bony attachment (epicondyle) of the elbow tendons, the condition is called epicondylitis.

At the end of the elbow is a fluid-filled sac called the “bursa” that cushions the elbow bone. The bursa can become compressed due to an injury or repetitive motion, which can lead to pain and swelling. Because of this, it is common to see this condition in athletes and students.

Arthritis is a very common condition that people of all ages can suffer from. There are many different forms of arthritis, but it is typically caused by repetitive motions or an injury that impacts the cartilage in the joints of the elbow, wrist, or hand. Because of their frequent repetitive usage, the elbow, wrist and hands can often be affected by arthritic pain.

Sprains and strains typically occur suddenly, such as when you break a fall with an outstretched arm or suffer a blow. Symptoms can include pain, tenderness, or swelling around the elbow during movement or at rest. These types of injuries often resolve within a few weeks with simple self care which we can advise you about RSI symptoms are commonly experienced in the hand and wrist by people who use their hands a lot for their work – for example hairdressing, typing or manual work. Symptoms can include localised pain, swelling, altered sensation, pins and needles, weakness and stiffness.

ABOUT US

How we work

Multi-disciplinary patient-centred healthcare

Lots of clinics have different healthcare professionals under the same roof but they don’t tend to collaborate fully or share care with patients. They also don’t have clear and proven care protocols which have been tested and refined to provide the best possible results, and value for time and money for patients. At Core Clinics all our clinicians and therapists work in an integrated way, adapted to the needs of each patient. So, when you make a first appointment with anyone in our team, you’ll have access to everyone in our team – and we’ll clearly signpost to you who you should see and what you can do to help yourself too. We’ve developed and refined this approach for over 15 years and helped over 13,000 patients.

Don't just take our word for it

We have helped thousands of people to achieve a better state of health, or to reach their sports performance goals.
