Dr Joanna Astill

Dr Joanna Astill is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, specialised in working with adults who experience mental health difficulties, including traumatic stress disorders, depression and anxiety as well as relationship problems.

She uses an integrative approach to psychotherapy and draws upon various models of therapy, depending on the outcome of initial assessments and the goals of treatment that are identified through working together as a partnership. Approaches used include experiential psychodynamic therapy and aspects of cognitive-behavioural and cognitive analytic therapy. Joanna is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), which features in NICE guidelines for treatment of Trauma and has an emerging evidence base for treatment of other difficulties such as chronic pain.

Joanna’s other specialist interests are neurodevelopmental disorders, in particular Autistic Spectrum Conditions and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (in adults). Joanna has extensive experience of working with people who are seeking help in understanding and managing some of the difficulties associated with these conditions.

In addition, Joanna previously ran an NHS service providing neuropsychological assessment for people with mental health difficulties who suffered cognitive problems following physical or psychological trauma. For example, utilising specialist cognitive and psychometric tests for the assessment of memory difficulties or behavioural and personality changes following a trauma. As assessment of this kind varies greatly, depending on the specific nature of the referral, these are discussed on a case by case basis.

Joanna is an Affiliated Member of the British Psychological Society: Membership number 93101 and an Applied Practitioner Psychologist – HCPC membership number: PYL01804
